For Rogelio Tarango Jr., earning his high school diploma is about more than completing his education; it is about creating new opportunities for himself and setting an example for his family.

Now a husband, father of three, and full-time employee with Fabens ISD just outside of El Paso, Rogelio always knew he wanted more for his future. Over time, the challenges that stemmed from not having a high school diploma became the motivation he needed to make a change and pursue his education through TexasWorks, a tuition-free diploma and career certification program for adults ages 18–50.

“For Rogelio Tarango Jr., earning his high school diploma is about more than completing his education; it is about creating new opportunities for himself and setting an example for his family.”

“I realized I would only be able to go so far without a high school diploma,” said Tarango. “That realization, along with wanting to set an example for my family, is what ultimately motivated me to enroll at Texas Works – El Paso (Eastpointe).”

Balancing full-time work and family responsibilities, Rogelio’s return to the classroom required commitment, discipline, and sacrifice. “Returning to school as an adult has not always been easy,” he said. “Even though I still face obstacles from time to time, I am extremely thankful for programs like TexasWorks and my family and teachers for supporting and encouraging me as I take this next step.”

Since enrolling at TexasWorks, Rogelio has not only continued working toward his diploma but has also rediscovered a lifelong dream. Inspired by his progress, he recently decided to pursue a career with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

“At TexasWorks, students are supported as individuals with the understanding that life’s challenges do not define one’s ability to succeed,” said TexasWorks – El Paso (Eastpointe) Campus Director Jesus Navarrete Jr. “Through personalized pathways to graduation and career readiness, the program helps students move forward at their own pace while receiving the support they need to succeed.”

TexasWorks aims to meet students where they are by creating individualized pathways to graduation and career readiness while ensuring their personal needs and aspirations are supported. Students find not only an educational community, but also the space to rewrite their narrative. His journey reminds us that with support, hard work, and dedication, it is never too late to rewrite your story.
