From an early age, it was evident that sisters Amy, Christy, and Theresa Le had the intelligence and work ethic to be successful students and attend college. The only roadblock to their success appeared to be the ever-rising cost of college tuition.
The average cost of college tuition at a 4-year institution, before room and board, is almost $10,000 per year. For the Le’s and many families in their situation, difficult decisions, concessions, and significant debt seem like the only options.
Luckily, the Le sisters didn’t have to tap into a college fund or ask for funds from a long-lost rich uncle. They saved on college by attending high school at iSchool High – The Woodlands. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) accredited Early College High School allows students to earn up to an associate degree for free, thanks to a partnership with Lone Star College. Attending high school on a Lone Star College campus, students seamlessly transition into a college learning environment without spending time or money at a 4-year university. Having earned two years of college credit, Christy and Amy were able to enroll at a four-year institution as college juniors. Younger sister Theresa plans to do the same when she graduates from iSchool High in May. The iSchool High program not only shortens the college timeline, but it also places students on a career fast track, says the oldest sister Christy.
“I wanted to be a speech-language pathologist, so I knew I would have to be in school for several years and finish my clinical fellowship.“ she said. “iSchool allowed me to reduce the time it would take to get started in my career.”
Christy recently received a master’s degree in communication science and disorders from Texas A&M Kingsville and is in the last year of her clinical fellowship. She plans to help people relearn communication skills after serious illness or injury.
Middle sister, Amy, is an accounting major at Sam Houston State University and plans to pursue her master’s degree in finance. Theresa, the youngest, is currently a senior at iSchool High – The Woodlands and plans to attend The University of Houston or Sam Houston State and major in finance.
