At ResponsiveEd, we are focused not only on the success of our students but on the achievements and growth of our talented educators leading the way. As we assemble the best collection of talent around to inspire and provide hope for students, we are honored to spotlight those already making a difference in the lives of our students across the district.
This week, we sat down with Rozzell Barber, who teaches fifth and sixth grade at Quest Collegiate Academy – Whitewright.
Tell Us About Yourself
I was born and raised in Houston and graduated from The University of Mary-Hardin-Baylor. I joined ResponsiveEd in November of 2021 and teach Fifth and Sixth Grade at Quest Collegiate Academy – Whitewright.
What inspired you to become an educator?
My grandmother served as a lifelong inspiration to me. Several years ago, I was asked to go on a mission trip, and my grandmother wholeheartedly encouraged me to participate. That trip changed my life and eventually led me to become a teacher. During that trip, I met a student facing unimaginable challenges, and it was then that I realized that children need more than just an education. They need to feel a sense of belonging and a safe space outside of their homes where others can nurture and believe in them.
What are some things that your students have taught you?
My students have taught me the value of creativity. As adults, it’s easy to become preoccupied with life’s distractions. Being with my students every day reminds me to slow down and appreciate life’s small pleasures. Additionally, my students’ love for art serves as a constant reminder of the importance of self-expression without being overly concerned about others’ opinions.
What are you most proud of about your time with Quest Collegiate Academy – Whitewright?
I am most proud of the opportunity to see my students grow and succeed both in and out of the classroom.ย I wholeheartedly believe in ResponsiveEd’s educational model, and I am proud to play a small part in that mission.
What do you like most about being an educator for your campus?
What I enjoy the most is being able to create fun and engaging lessons for our class Power Hour. I also enjoy working with other educators who not only prepare students academically but also for the challenges that life will bring in the future as well.ย
What is a memorable moment you can share from the classroom?
One day I left school when I was feeling mentally defeated and facing personal challenges. When I returned the following day, I walked into a classroom to find notes from students of all grades. These heartfelt letters were filled with inspiration, love, and joy. They helped me navigate that tough time and reminded me of my purpose. It was a powerful reminder that our presence can have a profound impact on others.
