At ResponsiveEd, we are focused not only on the success of our students but on the achievements and growth of our talented educators leading the way. As we assemble the best collection of talent around to inspire and provide hope for students, we are honored to spotlight those already making a difference in the lives of our students across the district.

This week, we sat down with Ms. Ranielle Jerika Fagen, who teaches sixth grade at our Quest Collegiate Academy – Shenandoah.

Tell Us About Yourself

I was born in Olongapo City, Philippines, and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas. I graduated from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock with a bachelor’s degree in Education in 2020 amid the pandemic and received my teaching license at age 22. I joined ResponsiveEd in October of 2022 and teach sixth-grade English, Language Arts, Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies at Quest Collegiate Academy – Shenandoah.

What inspired you to become an educator?

I have wanted to be an educator for as long as I can remember. All my teachers played a huge role in making me the educator that I am today. Growing up, my teachers represented a small percentage of teachers who were minorities. Regardless of any challenges my teachers were facing, they always taught me patience, love, and how to care for others. My teachers had high expectations for not only me but every student.

Because of their examples, I strive to do the same by making an impact in the lives of all my students and helping shape them to be future leaders.

What are some things that your students have taught you?

Because my students live in a generation full of change and technology, they have taught me that there are always new ways to teach. They also continue to teach me the importance of getting to know them. I started teaching at Quest Collegiate Academy – Shenandoah in the middle of the school year, and it was quite a transition for both myself and the class. I quickly realized that providing a quality education goes beyond just going into the classroom and teaching. Students needed to get to know me to feel most comfortable and safe to learn.

As educators, we are responsible for building those student relationships to further their success.

What are you most proud of about your time with Quest Collegiate Academy – Shenandoah?

From day one, my team welcomed me with open arms. They have continuously provided me with the support and resources to help advance my teaching skills and ensure that I am the best person I can be for my students. I am proud of my team, who constantly work to support one another. All of the weight of an educator is never placed too heavily on one person because my team is always here to help carry the weight, and I am extremely grateful for them!

What do you like most about being an educator for your campus?

I like working for ResponsiveEd for several reasons. My leadership, in particular, has been a great support system. My Director and Assistant Director have been so helpful with providing extra resources and having meaningful conversations and feedback that ensure my success here.

What is a memorable moment you can share from the classroom?

My class is bold, brave, and confident. One student, who used to be very shy, has come out of their shell since I started teaching here. From day one, I made it my goal to ensure that my classroom was a safe place free of judgment and where every student could be themselves.

Over time, they opened up to me and began to see how many things we had in common! It was then that I could see that they finally felt comfortable coming to me about anything. It’s a great feeling to know that simple conversations and actions can impact your students and their success.
