This week, we sat down with Dena Peterson, who teaches Latin at Founders Classical Academy – Leander.

Tell Us About Yourself

I began my teaching career in public schools in Corpus Christi, Texas. After spending time in California, I started homeschooling my two sons and teaching for several local homeschooling groups. I later discovered classical education and served as the director of a high school group with a classical curriculum. In 2021, I joined ResponsiveEd and teach Latin at Founders Classical Academy – Leander.

What inspired you to become an educator?

The teachers I had in elementary school inspired me to become an educator. I have loved learning for as long as I can remember and wanted to share that passion with students of all ages.

What are some things that your students have taught you?

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned from my students is that learning looks different for everyone. Some students may need extra patience and support in certain areas, while others thrive with clear parameters and firm expectations from the start. Recognizing these individual needs helps create an environment where each student can succeed.

What are you most proud of about your time with Founders Classical Academy – Leander?

My proudest moments come from watching my students persevere through challenges and emerge stronger. Witnessing their personal and academic growth and resilience is incredibly rewarding.

What do you like most about being an educator for your campus?

My favorite thing about working for ResponsiveEd is the people. My leadership and fellow teachers are incredibly encouraging and supportive and do a great job creating a fun and collaborative environment.
