At ResponsiveEd, we are focused not only on the success of our students but on the achievements and growth of our talented educators leading the way. As we assemble the best collection of talent around to inspire and provide hope for students, we are honored to spotlight those already making a difference in the lives of our students across the district.
This week, we sat down with Consuelo Cabrera, who teaches math and social studies at Westchase Neighborhood School.
Tell Us About Yourself
I was born and raised in Venezuela and received my degree in computer engineering before moving to the Houston area in 2001. I joined ReponsiveEd in 2022 and teach math and social studies at Westchase Neighborhood School.
What inspired you to become an educator?
I always wanted to make a difference in the world and the lives of students by educating and helping them achieve their goals. Before becoming a teacher, I enrolled as a violinist in “El Sistema,” a voluntary sector music education program. The lessons I learned in “El Sistema” not only shaped my approach to teaching but fueled my determination to inspire and empower students to become agents of positive change in their communities.
What are some things that your students have taught you?
My students have taught me that every student is unique and the best way to help them succeed in and out of the classroom is to get to know them on a personal level. My students have also taught me to be the change I want to see in the world. We often don’t set high enough standards for ourselves and each other and neglect to see how much we are capable of.
What are you most proud of about your time with Westchase Neighborhood School?
I am proud that I can integrate and share other areas of study, like art, mathematics, and social studies curriculum.
What do you like most about being an educator for your campus?
I am grateful for and enjoy all of the opportunities for collaboration that ResponsiveEd has provided me. Not only do I have strong relationships with my students, but my colleagues as well.
