At ResponsiveEd, we are focused not only on the success of our students but on the achievements and growth of our talented educators leading the way. As we assemble the best collection of talent around to inspire and provide hope for students, we are honored to spotlight those already making a difference in the lives of our students across the district.

This week, we sat down with Alexis Escobar who teaches First Grade at Westchase Neighborhood School.

Tell Us About Yourself

I was born and raised in Houston and am a first-generation college graduate from The University of Houston-Downtown. I joined ResponsiveEd in July of 2021 and teach first grade at Westchase Neighborhood School.

What inspired you to become an educator?

My third-grade teacher, Mrs. Davis, impacted me from an early age. She believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself and was always the first to cheer me on. After spending some time working in the medical field, I couldn’t help but feel like something was missing in my career. It wasn’t until I became a teacher’s assistant that I realized my true passion was teaching and that working with children was what I was meant to do. Because of Mrs. Davis, I go to work each day looking to impact my students’ lives the way she did mine.

What are some things that your students have taught you?

My students have taught me that love should be the center of everything we do. Even on difficult days, we must walk into that classroom and treat everyone with love, kindness, and respect.

What are you most proud of about your time with Westchase Neighborhood School?

I’m most proud of the classroom culture I’ve created with my students. I can see the love and respect we all have for each other and it makes me proud that we can celebrate our successes and comfort one another when our days don’t always go as planned.

What do you like most about being an educator for your campus?

What I like most about working at Westchase Neighborhood School is feeling seen by leadership and knowing that my voice and opinions matter.

What is a memorable moment you can share from the classroom?

Last year I received the news that I would get to follow my kindergarten class to first grade. Over the next few weeks, I told them I knew their new teacher and would soon reveal them to the class.

After much anticipation, I printed my picture out on colorful paper with the exciting news and flipped them upside down on their desks. I even gave them a speech about how much I would miss them and that I’ll always be there for them no matter what. After counting down, they flipped their papers over and realized it was me! The tears of joy, screaming, hugging, and celebrating will forever be one of the most memorable moments in my classroom.
