Premier High School – El Paso (Eastpointe) alum Diego Uribe always dreamt of playing collegiate soccer. However, like countless student-athletes nationwide, he faced the challenge of balancing academics with his passion for soccer.

A talented midfielder, Diego is a member of the El Paso Locomotive FC USL Academy, a youth soccer club created to provide unique opportunities for aspiring players of all ages in the Borderplex region. Despite joining the academy only two years prior, his exceptional skills propelled him to the academy U-20 USL team.

Uribe announces commitment to Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas.

However, his journey was not without its hurdles. The rigid structure of traditional schooling often clashed with his rigorous soccer training regimen, leaving little time to study and rest throughout the day. After his coach noticed several of their players were struggling with the same issue, they reconnected with Premier High School – El Paso (Eastpointe) Campus Director Osvaldo Morales, whom they had previously met at a campus community event to discuss the need for an alternative educational option for players.

With the help and support of the staff at Premier High School, Diego and six other teammates enrolled at the campus this past August, eager to earn their high school diplomas while pursuing their athletic goals.

Once enrolled, Diego and his teammates found a supportive environment tailored to their unique needs that allowed them to balance academics and athletics while providing the time and flexibility necessary to hone their soccer skills.

The campus emphasis on independence, life skills, and proactive academic participation continues to provide students like Diego with the tools to move at a pace best suited for their schedule and learning style and achieve success inside and outside the classroom.

“We are so proud of Diego and all of the other players we currently have at our school,” said Premier High School – El Paso (Eastpointe) Campus Director Osvaldo Morales. “We feel honored to be able to offer them opportunities that will ultimately help them achieve their personal and academic goals and cannot wait to see all they accomplish in the future.”

With hard work, dedication, and unwavering support from his coaches, teachers, and family, Diego graduated from Premier High School – El Paso (Eastpointe) in February, recently announcing his commitment to Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas. As Sul Ross prepares to transition to an NCAA Division II school before the 2024-25 season, Diego’s future with the Lobos shines bright, promising a new chapter filled with opportunities for personal and academic growth.

Diego’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance to aspiring student-athletes everywhere, reminding them that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.
