A unique aspect of Premier High School is our Career and Technical Education (CTE) options. Through these options, students receive job training, have opportunities to participate in paid or unpaid internships, receive industry-recognized certifications, and begin meaningful careers after high school. In honor of Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month, we talked to our Premier High School – Houston (Gallery Furniture North), about its CTE offering in welding.
In the campus Welding program, students learn the basics of welding Stick, Flux-Core, TIG, and MIG, while earning college credits through the Houston Community College system. The campus outdoor welding lab is equipped with 21 booths, Flextec 500X welding machines, and “all the metal (students) can weld”. Throughout the program, students receive hands-on experience, including participation in welding competitions and special projects. Upon completion, program participants can receive their NCCER certification, a highly prominent tool that trades use to verify credentials.
“When you are learning to weld, you need to look where you are going, not where you came from,” said campus Welding Instructor Jimmy Landers, who has 40 years of experience as a welder. “You cannot change where you came from, but you can change where you are going – and this program helps you get there.”
Why Career and Technical Education (CTE)? Students can begin training for a career while earning their diploma at Premier High School. CTE gives students the skills and training to further their education and pursue meaningful careers in high-demand professions.
