TexasWorks – Weslaco, a new tuition-free diploma and career certification program for adult learners ages 18-50, prepares for a major milestone: the graduation of the program’s first student, Brenda Mata. Graduation is an achievement deeply personal to Brenda, marking the culmination of decades of perseverance and hard work. While her path to earning her diploma has been anything but easy, it is a testament to her remarkable resilience and determination.
Originally from Mexico, Brenda previously studied business, and earned her college degree. Eager to continue to build her future, she came to the United States 28 years ago, only to find her credits did not transfer. Later, a decision to return to Mexico to care for her family put her aspirations and education in the United States on hold. Upon eventually returning to Texas, Brenda began looking for opportunities to complete her high school diploma in the United States, not only as a personal achievement but as a pathway to new career opportunities and a better future for her family.
However, finding an educational program suited for adult learners proved challenging. That’s when she heard about TexasWorks – Weslaco through a former colleague. Motivated by the prospect of earning her high school diploma, Brenda wasted no time enrolling. She was thrilled to discover that TexasWorks offered a flexible schedule and mastery-based curriculum, allowing her to pursue her education while working from home full-time and raising her two young daughters.
“Her dedication is clear,” said Campus Director Rosie Zamora. “Each day she comes to class with a smile and is always willing to go above and beyond to complete her coursework. Her positive attitude and commitment to creating a better future is inspiring and sets a great example for her peers.”
As she prepares to walk the stage this May, Brenda credits her success to the faculty and staff at TexasWorks.“Before enrolling, I did not think I would get a second chance,” said Mata. “The staff at TexasWorks believed in me from the beginning and have supported me every step of the way. Sometimes, all a person needs is someone to believe in them.”
After graduation, Brenda tells us she plans to earn a college degree in the U.S. and hopes to one day become a teacher and follow in the footsteps of those who helped her. Like many others across the country, her journey serves as a reminder that it is never too late to rewrite your story.
