At ResponsiveEd, we are focused not only on the success of our students but on the achievements and growth of our talented educators leading the way. As we assemble the best collection of talent around to inspire and provide hope for students, we are honored to spotlight those already making a difference in the lives of our students across the district.
This week, we sat down with Julia West, who teaches mathematics at iSchool High at University Park.
Tell Us About Yourself
I grew up in College Station, Texas, and graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Mathematics. After pursuing teaching, I spent a few years teaching in a small school district outside of Little Rock until I retired to raise my three sons. I joined ResponsiveEd in 2016 and teach dual-credit mathematics courses at iSchool High at University Park.
What inspired you to become an educator?
I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. As a child, I would “teach” my stuffed animals from a makeshift chalkboard in my garage. As I entered high school, I had great teachers who continued to inspire me and encouraged me to pursue a career in teaching.
What are some things that your students have taught you?
The biggest lesson that my students have taught me is that we all need grace. Some days, my lessons don’t go as planned, yet my students are always kind and understanding. Each day, I come to work intending to reciprocate that same grace and compassion to others.
What are you most proud of about your time with iSchool High at University Park?
Though I am proud of all my students, I am most proud of our seniors who graduate with their Associate’s degrees from Lone Star College. Many of our students are first-generation college students, and I feel honored to play a small part in this incredible accomplishment. Each year, I look forward to celebrating their hard work and success, knowing that they are changing the trajectory of their family dynamics.
What do you like most about being an educator for your campus?
I am grateful for the opportunities to get to know my students personally. Because iSchool High is so unique, we are helping them grow in their education and shaping young hearts and minds, molding them into productive members of society.
