At ResponsiveEd, we are focused not only on the success of our students but on the achievements and growth of our talented educators leading the way. As we assemble the best collection of talent around to inspire and provide hope for students, we are honored to spotlight those already making a difference in the lives of our students across the district.
This week, we sat down with Jada Cadena who teaches math and career and technical education (CTE) courses at Premier High School – Austin (Wells Branch).
Tell Us About Yourself
I was born and raised near Galveston, Texas, and graduated from the University of Texas before receiving my Masterโs in Education Policy-Equity and Diversity from The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. I joined ResponsiveEd in March of this year, where I teach all levels of high school Math and various Career and Technical Education courses.
What inspired you to become an educator?
I have met some incredible educators throughout my life who continue to inspire me every day. Hearing how passionate they were while talking about their experiences and love for teaching has led me to discover that learning can happen in many ways.
What are some things that your students have taught you?
Throughout my time as a teacher, my students have taught me the importance of authenticity and listening. Because of them, I have learned that my greatest tool as an educator is listening to my students and their needs. When we take the time to listen and understand one another, we can achieve so much. I have learned more and taught more than I ever thought possible just by taking the time to appreciate and get to know my students.ย
What are you most proud of about your time with Premier High School – Austin (Wells Branch)?
I am so proud of my first class of graduates who worked hard to overcome obstacles throughout the year. Watching them invest so much time and effort into their goals and see them become successful and walk that stage was incredibly rewarding.
What do you like most about being an educator for your campus?
I love that our teachers use their strengths to support each other and their students. Not only do I enjoy working with them, but I enjoy getting to know them on a personal level and developing those relationships.
What is a memorable moment you can share from the classroom?
Every year, I volunteer my mother on her behalf to come to the school and present for campus Career Day. This year, a student found my mother after her presentation to tell her I was a good teacher. It was unprompted and surprising from a typically shy student, but it was such a kind gesture.ย
