At ResponsiveEd, we are focused not only on the success of our students but on the achievements and growth of our talented educators leading the way. As we assemble the best collection of talent around to inspire and provide hope for students, we are honored to spotlight those already making a difference in the lives of our students across the district.

This week, we sat down with Brittany Willard who teaches English at iSchool High at University Park.

Tell Us About Yourself

I was born and raised in South Texas and earned my degree in Social Work from Prairie View A&M University. I joined ResponsiveEd in 2019 and teach English II at iSchool High – University Park.

What inspired you to become an educator?

While working in youth ministry, tutoring students in English was part of my weekly schedule. It was always extremely fulfilling to see their eyes light up when they grasped a concept they had been struggling with. It was not until I left ministry and spent time in the Social Work field that I found myself missing the opportunity to teach and connect with students.

What are some things that your students have taught you?

One of the best things my students have taught me is that healthy student-teacher relationships are critical to student success. Students are less likely to ask for help with academic struggles if they do not feel they have a teacher they can turn to for support.

My students have also taught me that my perspective on each day matters because it impacts their mindset. I have learned more about myself by being their teacher and always making it a point to show up for them daily with a good attitude and a smile.

What are you most proud of about your time at iSchool High at University Park?

I am most proud of the relationships I have built with my colleagues and my students. The friendships I have established with my colleagues go beyond our time at school and are something I am incredibly grateful for. Healthy relationships with my administration, students, and fellow teachers are constantly at the forefront of my mind.

What do you like most about being an educator for your campus?

I love how rewarding it is to work for a school that constantly looks for new opportunities for students to succeed. I also love that, as educators, we are encouraged to build and develop friendships with each other in and out of the classroom.

What is a memorable moment you can share from the classroom?

One year, my birthday fell on Thanksgiving. On the day we were leaving for break, my homeroom class had one of the administrators call me into their office while they set up a birthday party for me. When I returned, they surprised me with cupcakes, my favorite coffee, and sang “Happy Birthday”. They even secretly took a picture as a class which they framed with a note they had all written.
