English as a Second Language (ESL) students nationwide often encounter several unique challenges. Many of these challenges, such as language barriers and cultural adjustments, can make the educational journeys for these students more demanding. Determined to help her students overcome these obstacles, Brenda Alcantar, the lead English and ESL teacher at our Premier High School – El Paso (Eastpointe), set out to create a nurturing environment where ESL students could thrive academically and socially.
Her initiative, known as Mi Amigos, serves as an additional resource for ESL students on campus, cultivating a supportive community where students can practice English, receive personalized guidance, and celebrate their diverse backgrounds.
The inclusive and academic club-like atmosphere encourages students to work together in groups, fostering a sense of community and mutual support. Various activities, including campus-wide events, field trips, game nights, and shared meals at local restaurants, enable students to share their unique traditions and experiences while providing additional opportunities to practice their skills beyond the confines of the classroom. Additionally, the group attends campus college and career fairs and participates in mock interviews to prepare them for the future.
Recognizing that each student has distinct learning needs, Brenda conducts one-on-one mentoring sessions, offering encouragement and additional assistance as necessary. Her ability to address individual concerns helps students build confidence and embrace their linguistic and cultural identities.
Brenda firmly believes that family support plays a vital role in academic success. Consequently, the club organizes family nights and parent-teacher conferences to acknowledge family efforts to support their students at home. These events also serve to encourage and showcase the progress each student is making in the classroom.
Now in its third year, the program has received widespread acclaim and is visibly transforming the lives of the campus’ ESL students. This summer, Brenda was invited by Premier High School Superintendent Jason Bernal to share her vision and goals with other Premier High School leadership members, aiming to expand the mission of Mi Amigos across campuses.
“I am so proud of my students and how far they have come,” said Alcantar. “It is truly inspiring to see how much this program has helped them excel academically and I look forward to witnessing the mission of this initiative grow, and hopefully, be used at more Premier High School campuses.”
