Ignite Community School – Mainland restores campus garden.

As the spring season blooms, so do the campus gardens at several of our Ignite Community Schools. The warmer weather and sunshine have allowed our Ignite scholars the unique opportunity to spend a part of their school days outdoors, learning, building teamwork skills, and connecting with nature.

Ignite Community School – Mainland, in particular, recently restored its campus garden with the help of scholars, staff, and families. Scholars got to work together to rebuild the gardens and plant new seeds they will get to tend in the coming months. Mainland teacher Mr. Roberts’ class was among the first to plant their campus garden seeds, which include jalapeños, basil, and strawberries.

Garland campus, Ignite Community School – Garland, offers its scholars a Garden Club, where they learn “valuable lessons about the journey food takes from seed to plate.” Garland teacher Luis Chavez and Dean of Instruction Kortishama Burnice created the club as an opportunity for scholars to engage in hands-on learning.

“Gardening is a way for children to learn about the environment and how to nourish their bodies with fresh food,” Chavez and Burnice said.

Earlier this year, the Garland campus Garden Club recorded a bountiful harvest of 162 pounds of vegetables grown, all of which they shared with the community through a donation to the local community pantry, Good Samaritans of Garland.

Through these hands-on opportunities and the ability to learn critical skills, such as teamwork and diligence, the Ignite campus gardens are growing more than you will find in the soil. It is the transformation of scholars into future leaders prepared with the knowledge, patience, and critical skill set to succeed.

Ignite Community Schools is dedicated to providing scholars with a learning environment that allows them to develop a sense of belonging, an understanding of self, and an awareness of their place and impact on the world around them.
