When Alyssa Stout graduated from Amarillo Collegiate Academy in 2020, she left with more than a high school diploma; she also carried valuable college experience. Amarillo Collegiate Academy, a tuition-free public charter school serving students in grades K-12, provides an individualized, mastery-based curriculum designed to prepare students for success in college and beyond.
Through its partnership with Amarillo College, students at the campus can enroll in courses that earn both high school and college credit. This program allows students to earn college hours early, making higher education more accessible and affordable while building confidence through real college-level expectations. Many of the credits earned transfer to colleges and universities across Texas, giving students like Alyssa a head start toward their academic and professional goals.
Throughout her time at the school, Alyssa took full advantage of this dual credit opportunity, earning college credits while completing her high school coursework. That early experience helped her move confidently into her next chapter, prepared for the pace and expectations of college-level learning culminating in graduating at the age of 20 with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. She is currently in her third year as a labor and delivery nurse at the age of 23.
“Participating in the dual credit program helped me learn how to manage my time and communicate with my instructors,” Alyssa said. “When I started college, I felt confident and prepared because it was something I had already experienced.” By the time she graduated, Alyssa had developed the ability to work independently, ask questions, and balance responsibilities, skills many students gain only after entering college.
“Dual credit doesn’t just prepare students academically; it fosters resilience, independence, and college readiness,” said Campus Director Chad Reneau. “Students like Alyssa are a reminder of what is possible when students fully embrace the opportunities available at Amarillo Collegiate Academy.”
