TexasWorks proudly marked a new chapter in adult education with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 14 for its tuition-free diploma and career certification program, offering adult learners, ages 18-50, in the Edinburg community access to flexible learning pathways that foster career and technical education (CTE) opportunities. Community leaders and officials gathered to celebrate this milestone, joined by local supporters and representatives from across the region.
Texas State Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, Texas State Board of Education Member LJ Francis, Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez, and Mario Reyna of the Hidalgo County Prosperity Task Force all spoke at the ceremony, commending the TexasWorks team and the program’s potential to drive economic mobility and job readiness in the area. Their remarks underscored the essential role TexasWorks will play in equipping adults with the skills and certifications needed to excel in today’s workforce.
“Edinburg has always been a community that values hard work and resilience, and it is at the heart of TexasWorks,” said Dr. Elizabeth Camarena, Superintendent of TexasWorks. “Each certification earned, every skill mastered, and every new diploma awarded will be a building block in creating a more robust and resilient workforce that is deeply connected to the needs of our community.”
Executive Director Rosalinda Gonzalez, emphasized the program’s community impact: “Today marks a new chapter in education for our community, where we bridge the gap between opportunity and achievement for those seeking to earn their high school diploma and gain valuable career skills.”
Guests, including representatives from the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce, had the chance to speak with TexasWorks instructors and program staff, gaining insight into the various CTE programs offered, including fields like healthcare, drone pilot, and other skilled trades. The event marks a significant step in enhancing workforce readiness across South Texas.
TexasWorks – Edinburg (Career & Technology Center) is part of a statewide initiative to address the educational needs of adults seeking high school completion and career certifications.
