San Angelo, Texas – November 7, 2024 – TexasWorks, a new tuition-free adult education program, celebrated its official ribbon-cutting ceremony in San Angelo today, marking the city’s first and only adult high school dedicated to helping learners ages 18 to 50 complete their diplomas and gain career certifications. Led by Campus Director Bree Sherwood, the event drew a crowd of local leaders, educators, and community members who gathered to support and honor the program’s mission of providing flexible and supportive education options for adult learners.

Honored guests included Cheryl deCordova, District Director for Texas State Senator Charles Perry, and Lori Wilson, District Director for Texas State Representative Drew Darby. In recognition of the program’s groundbreaking presence in the community, Texas State Representative Drew Darby presented TexasWorks with a certificate, officially acknowledging it as the “First and Only Adult Education High School in San Angelo, Texas.”

Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Camarena praised the program’s role in bridging educational gaps for adults in San Angelo, noting, “TexasWorks is so much more than just a program–it’s a transformative journey. Each certification earned, every skill mastered, and every new diploma awarded will be a building block in creating a more robust and resilient workforce that is deeply connected to the needs of our community.”

TexasWorks offers adult learners the opportunity to complete their high school education alongside career and technical education (CTE) programs, equipping students with practical skills to succeed in today’s workforce. Director of Career & Technical Education Dr. Craig Shapiro spoke to the program’s transformative impact, saying, “With the rapidly changing workforce skill demands, it is more critical now that adults have a place to earn valuable diplomas and certifications to compete in the job market,” Shapiro said. “This program will afford our students opportunities to begin careers in high-demand areas that will contribute positively to the community and their families.”

Regional Director Tanya Bell emphasized the significance of TexasWorks for adult learners in San Angelo. “Today marks a new chapter in education, where we bridge the gap between opportunity and achievement for those seeking to earn their high school diploma and gain valuable career skills,” said Bell.

TexasWorks – San Angelo is part of a statewide initiative to address the educational needs of adults seeking high school completion and career certifications. The program offers flexible learning options, including evening and online classes, to accommodate busy work schedules and family responsibilities, ensuring accessibility to all adults in the community.
