In honor of our 25th anniversary, ResponsiveEd proudly reflects on the stories and successes of the organization over the years. One example of such success is Eagle Academy (now Premier High School) Alum Zelene Zaleta.

Like many students nationwide, Zelene experienced academic struggles in a traditional high school setting. Dissatisfied with this model, she sought an environment that met her strong desire to work at a faster pace. During her sophomore year, Zelene decided to enroll at Eagle Academy in Brownsville, now Premier High School – Brownsville.

The campus emphasis on independence, life skills, and proactive academic participation continues to provide students like Zelene with the tools to move at a pace suited to their learning style and achieve success inside and outside the classroom.

Though the road to Premier High School – Brownsville was not without challenges, Zelene knew she found a space that nurtured her growth and academic success once she arrived. The personalized approach to education provided the perfect setting for her to grow academically and personally. Not long after enrolling, Zelene received her high school diploma from Premier High School – Brownsville at only 17 years old.

Her achievements at the school led her to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) in Brownsville, Texas, where she graduated in 2014 with a degree in criminal justice. After graduation, she returned to school, enrolling at the Thurgood Marshall School of Law on the Texas Southern University campus. Since becoming a bar-certified lawyer, Zelene has established her own law firm, the Law Office of Zelene Zaleta PLLC, located in McAllen, Texas, specializing in immigration and federal criminal defense.

“One key factor that contributed to my success at the campus was the support and personalized attention I received from my teachers,” said Zaleta. “Their guidance and encouragement motivated me to work hard and excel in my courses.”

Her hard work and dedication have allowed her to achieve personal success and led her to give back to the community that supported her throughout her academic journey. As she continues to provide hope, she stays dedicated to her support of Premier High School – Brownsville by starting the process of joining the campus mentee program, reflecting her eagerness to inspire and guide the next generation.

Zelene’s story captures Premier High School’s impact on students wanting an alternative educational route. Overcoming personal challenges and attaining professional success, her journey illustrates the effectiveness of personalized education. Thriving in her legal career, she serves as an inspiration for those venturing on their individual paths to success.
