To achieve success in a STEM career, successful STEM students like the four members of the “CAD Lab Crew” at iSchool of Lewisville, make real-world connections with their coursework to solve out-of-this-world problems.  Using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software and 3-D printing, Kyle, Logan, Daniel and Landon of the CAD Lab Crew spent this school year designing the prototype for an artificial gravity space station, serving as the blueprint for next year’s project, a full-scale lunar space pod. Engineering 1, 2 and 3 students presented to professionals from the Air Force, Space Force and Nasa HUNCH representatives.  The four members of the CAD Lab Crew are confident in their artificial gravity space station design and look forward to interacting with people in professions they are interested in.

“It’s a little intimidating but it’s a great opportunity,” said the group’s oldest member Logan Cave. “We get to present our design ideas and solutions to professionals and learn from some of the best.”

iSchool of Lewisville’s STEM-focused P-TECH program allows students to take science, technology, engineering, and math-related courses as they pursue an industry-based associate’s degree and a high school diploma. iSchool’s curriculum, also allows students to accelerate their studies to graduate early or devote more time to career-specific activities like producing music or practicing CAD computer animation.

In addition to an annual presentation to STEM professionals, iSchool of Lewisville engineering students participated in the NASA Hunch Competition, where they are asked to create solutions to the challenges of space travel., This year students tackled projects like maintaining astronaut bone density in space and plant reproduction in a zero-gravity environment. This year’s students virtually presented their solutions to engineering professionals on May 20

“The students in the CAD lab are incredibly smart,” says Engineering teacher, Gary Wilhelmi. “They are able to use creativity to solve complex issues in a way that I have never seen before in students this age. I know they will go on to do great things for society.”
