What Is a STEM Education?

STEM is an acronym for four related areas of study: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. STEM education teaches students to connect the content they are studying and the real world. STEM classrooms are often associated with hands-on learning and projects requiring students to connect all four areas of study to solve problems.  There has been an increased focus on education in these fields worldwide due to the rapid evolution of technology and the growth of high-tech occupations.

What Are We Learning?

A STEM education asks students to apply things they learn from all four areas of study to find solutions. Students learn to draw from their growing knowledge across subjects to become creative, engaged problem solvers. Regardless of whether a student pursues a STEM career or pursue another path, STEM education helps students connect with the world around them.

Golden Opportunities

STEM education provides students with the building blocks of innovation and creativity that lead to success in college and the workplace. Studies show that a STEM curriculum in early childhood only makes interdisciplinary connections stronger and prepares students for STEM education and high-paying STEM careers.

So, Then What Is P-TECH?

P-TECH (Pathways in Technology Early College High School) is a public education reform model focused on college attainment and career readiness for grades 9-14. The program was founded by IBM in 2011 beginning with a single school in New York. The best feature of P-TECH is that students can receive both a High School diploma and a two-year degree in a STEM-related field.

Who Can Participate in a P-TECH Program?

Another great thing about P-TECH is that there is no cost to families and students. P-TECH was founded to provide a path to college for all students.

Career Benefits

The P-TECH program blends high school and college-level courses with workplace experiences where students get hands-on experience in the field of study. While the P-TECH program does not guarantee employment, it does allow students to gain valuable experience and access to a potential future employer.

STEM and P-TECH Go Hand In Hand

P-Tech is an early college program and STEM is a way of learning. When combined, students receive interdisciplinary training, college credit, and workplace experience for success in college and the 21st-century workplace.
