Through a partnership with the Unmanned Safety Institute (USI), eight Premier High School – Midland students will receive the FAA 107 drone pilot certification and a foothold on a high-demand career. These eight students can now fly unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) at night, over people, and moving vehicles. Moreover, students now have the initial qualifications needed to land a number of high-paying careers as a drone pilot.
“Our goal is to help students graduate with the tools they need to find a good job or continue their education,” says Premier High School – Midland campus director Jarret Hostas. “Demand for certified drone operators is especially high in the construction and engineering sectors – both industries are well represented in the Permian Basin.”
Students in the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle career course attend the class for an hour a day, four days a week with their USI instructor. Students complete their coursework independently, outside of the school day and instructors make themselves available for questions after independent study. At the end of the course, students must pass a final exam to earn the FAA 107 certification.
“The drone program was incredibly beneficial,” says Premier High School – Midland drone student, Memphis Rosalez. “It opened doors to new opportunities and career paths for us, and will be an awesome program for future students as well.”
