Fernanda Ochoa was 14 years old with a three-day-old baby when her mother enrolled her at Premier High School of Pharr/MacAllen. Motivated by the desire for her new son to be proud of her, Fernanda did not let her situation hold her back.
She said the staff of the school supported her and encouraged her to continue. “I took it as motivation to want to continue,” said Fernanda.
Director Rosie Zamora said Fernanda was dedicated to her education.”I have never seen any young lady so determined at the age of 14 with a baby,” said
Going beyond her goal of receiving her high school diploma, Fernanda graduated valedictorian. At graduation, she encouraged her fellow students to use their determination to give back to others.
