San Antonio’s medical community is one of the strongest in Texas, anchored by major hospitals, research centers, and clinics that provide care to millions of residents each year. As the demand for qualified professionals continues to rise, TexasWorks – San Antonio (Windcrest) is helping meet that need by preparing students to step directly into the healthcare workforce after graduation.
TexasWorks – San Antonio (Windcrest) is a tuition-free high school diploma and career certification program designed for adult learners ages 18–50. In addition to a flexible schedule and mastery-based curriculum, the campus breaks down barriers for students balancing work, family, and school with resources like on-site childcare and transportation assistance.
A highlight of the campus is its Career and Technical Education (CTE) offering, the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) program. Students receive both classroom instruction and hands-on training, gaining the technical knowledge and practical experience needed to succeed in clinics, hospitals, and other healthcare settings. Training includes obtaining and recording health histories and vital signs, and in some cases, testing vision, drawing blood, and performing basic laboratory procedures. Upon completion, students earn an industry-recognized certification, allowing them to enter the workforce immediately or continue their education in the medical field.
Among the students participating in the CMA program this school year is Cora Torres Carrillo, who says the program has been life-changing. After leaving high school due to challenges such as a lack of support and unreliable transportation, Cora enrolled at TexasWorks to create more opportunities for herself. “The teachers have been incredibly supportive,” she said. “They’ve helped me achieve my personal and academic goals and given me a new sense of confidence.”
“Our Certified Medical Assistant program is designed to not only equip students with the technical skills they need but also to instill a sense of professionalism and compassion that is essential in healthcare,” said Campus Director Dr. Luis Gonzalez. “San Antonio’s medical community is one of the largest employers in the region, and we are proud to give students like Cora the opportunity to step into meaningful, high-demand careers that give back to the community.”
