At ResponsiveEd, we are focused not only on the success of our students but on the achievements and growth of our talented educators leading the way. As we assemble the best collection of talent around to inspire and provide hope for students, we are honored to spotlight those already making a difference in the lives of our students across the district.
This week, we sat down with Kristen Hansen, who teaches ninth through twelfth grade at Premier High School – Amarillo.
Tell Us About Yourself
I was born in Oregon, raised in Tucson, Arizona, and graduated from The University of Arizona with a bachelor’s in animal health sciences. I earned a master’s degree in education and teaching certification in science and math from Wayland Baptist University. In 2006, I moved to Texas and spent the next 11 years working at ResponsiveEd schools in West Texas before transferring to Premier High School – Amarillo, where I teach ninth through twelfth grade.
What inspired you to become an educator?
Education has always been a big part of my life, being raised by two teachers growing up. While homeschooling my children, I realized my love for teaching and decided to pursue it as a career. Teaching is my passion, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share it with others.
What are some things that your students have taught you?
I have learned from my students that building relationships is critical to making a lasting impact on students. Additionally, working with different learning styles has led me to become a more understanding and patient person. What works for one student may not work for another, but that does not mean they can’t achieve the same goals and be successful.
What are you most proud of about your time with Premier High School – Amarillo?
I am most proud of the strong relationships with past students and their families. I strive daily to show my students that I truly care about them as people, not just students and that they can do incredible things.
What do you like most about being an educator for your campus?
I appreciate the flexibility that ResponsiveEd provides its faculty and staff. The unique model allows teachers like myself the freedom to create a space and teach lessons that meet the needs of all my students.
What is a memorable moment you can share from the classroom?
One year, I had the opportunity to take two of my classes to a local nursing home once a month to assist with group activities. Initially, many students were hesitant due to the residents’ limitations. However, after spending the next several weeks getting to know the residents, every student was in tears when our time with them ended.
