At ResponsiveEd, we are focused not only on the success of our students but on the achievements and growth of our talented educators leading the way. As we assemble the best collection of talent around to inspire and provide hope for students, we are honored to spotlight those already making a difference in the lives of our students across the district.

This week, we sat down with Joana Gomez, who teaches science at Westchase Neighborhood School.

Tell Us About Yourself

I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. I graduated from Prairie View A&M University with a bachelor’s in biomedical chemistry and also a master’s degree in teaching. I joined ResponsiveEd in August 2022 and teach science for grades 4-8 at Westchase Neighborhood School.

What inspired you to become an educator?

Growing up, my family always talked about the importance of education. Throughout my college career, several amazing teachers helped me discover and foster my passion for teaching and encouraged me to take on different roles in the field.

What are some things that your students have taught you?

My students have taught me that establishing strong relationships and setting high expectations is incredibly important. You can build student confidence by giving them goals to achieve and helping them navigate obstacles, and creating connections that inspire students to be resilient while having fun learning.

What are you most proud of about your time with Westchase Neighborhood School?

I am most proud of the curiosity I have instilled in my students. Seeing them in the classroom excited for the day’s lesson and ready to learn and ask questions brings me so much joy.

What do you like most about being an educator for your campus?

I walk into school feeling appreciated and heard, which has been transformative for my teaching career. My campus leader allows me to share my passion with students in and out of the classroom and has consistently shown that I matter as a teacher and a mother. As a result, I have been able to be part of my student and daughter’s important school memories, and I am eternally grateful for that balance.
