Students demonstrated their growing expertise in unmanned aerial systems.

On November 15, students from Premier High School – Midland and Premier High School – Dayton demonstrated their growing expertise in unmanned aerial systems at the Iconic Drone Education “Eyes in the Aisles” Drone Competition in San Antonio. Competing against 50 schools from across Texas, students in the Drone Pilot Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway put their skills to the test by navigating drones through a mock warehouse to complete real-world tasks, including inventory, hazard identification, and intruder detection.

The event challenged competitors to think critically, problem-solve, and work as a team. Premier High School – Dayton excelled at the event, earning a trophy for Best Engineering in the large drone class.

Through the Drone Pilot CTE pathway, students at both campuses engage in hands-on training that prepares them for rapidly expanding career fields. The program allows students to earn their FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification, the federal license required for commercial drone operation. By blending classroom instruction with practical flight experience, the course equips students with a strong foundation in aviation fundamentals, safety procedures, and airspace regulations, all while they earn their high school diploma and gain real-world experience that translates directly to in-demand jobs. Those who complete the program leave well-prepared for success in a variety of industries, including:

  • Aerial photography and videography
  • Agriculture and land surveying
  • Construction and infrastructure inspection
  • Emergency response and public safety

“Our students put in the work all year, and it really showed at the competition,” said Joseph Fregia, Drone Instructor at Premier High School – Dayton. “Through CTE programs like this one, students gain far more than technical skills; they’re developing problem-solving abilities and confidence. Competitions like this help them see how those strengths translate into careers, while also giving them the chance to connect with industry professionals who can guide them in the future.”

At Premier High School – Dayton, the drone program continues to grow. The campus has produced eight certified drone pilots, with seven more to be added at the end of the year.
