In today’s workforce, unmanned aerial systems (drones) are transforming industries from construction and agriculture to film and emergency response. Now, students at Premier High School and TexasWorks – Midland can prepare to join this fast-growing field through the school’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) offering in Drone Pilot.
This hands-on program gives students the opportunity to earn their FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification, the federal license required to operate drones commercially. Through a combination of classroom instruction and practical flight training, students build a strong foundation in aviation fundamentals, safety procedures, airspace regulations, and mission planning, all while earning their high school diploma and gaining real-world experience that translates directly to in-demand jobs. Those who complete the program leave well-prepared for success in a variety of industries, including:
- Aerial photography and videography
- Agriculture and land surveying
- Construction and infrastructure inspection
- Emergency response and public safety
- Freelance or entrepreneurial drone services
According to the Texas Education Agency (TEA), related occupations offer median wages between $48,000 and $72,000, with strong job prospects statewide.
Both Premier High School and TexasWorks are part of the ResponsiveEd network, offering tuition-free, flexible education designed to prepare students for life after graduation. Premier High School serves students in grades 9-12, blending academics with CTE pathways such as drone technology, welding, and healthcare. TexasWorks serves adult learners ages 18-50, helping them earn a high school diploma alongside industry-recognized certifications.
“The Drone Pilot program gives our students the chance to explore an exciting and evolving field while building valuable, marketable skills,” said Campus Director Jodie Browning. “We’re proud to provide opportunities that not only prepare students for graduation but also open doors to meaningful careers.”
This November, students in the program will proudly represent the campus at a statewide drone competition in San Antonio, hosted by Iconic Drone Education, demonstrating the skills and knowledge gained through the program.
