As the COVID-19 pandemic increased the demand for online education among students with different learning styles, many struggled to make the transition. In response, iSVA redesigned its 3-8 program to help more students acclimate to and thrive in a virtual learning environment. Here are the five most innovative changes iSVA made for students in grades 3-8.
- Support for a Stronger Start
During the first week of school, faculty will spend one-on-one time with students. They will help students acclimate to a virtual learning environment before beginning their coursework.
2. Focused Attention on Literacy
Reading comprehension and fluency have additional importance in an online learning environment. A reading specialist is now on staff at iSVA to support younger students when they experience reading challenges.
3. More Learning Pathways
iSVA now offers additional learning pathways for students with different learning styles. Options include live sessions, small group instruction, one-on-one instruction, recorded videos, and independent learning opportunities.
4. Elevated Expectations for Parent Involvement
In addition to student support, iSVA now offers 3-8 families the tools they need to be their student’s accountability partner.
5. Social Engagement Opportunities
iSVA students can now participate in clubs, homeroom activities, and a new character development program. Regionally based in-person social gatherings and community involvement opportunities will also be available.
“We have spent this past year working to develop a model that will provide our younger learners the best opportunity for success in a virtual environment,“ says iSchool Virtual Academy Director Mandy Stevens. “We are thrilled about our new program and cannot wait to be a part of these students’ academic journeys!”
