For most students, high school is a time to balance academics and social life. For Natalie Ramirez, it was also an opportunity to find a supportive environment that would help her focus, grow, and prepare for a meaningful career in healthcare.

Serving grades 9–12, Premier High School – Lubbock is a tuition-free public charter school that provides a flexible, custom-paced learning environment. The campus also offers Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, including the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) program, giving students like Natalie hands-on experience in a clinical setting and the opportunity to earn professional certification before graduation.

The CMA program prepares students to become skilled healthcare professionals who support physicians, nurse practitioners, and other medical providers. Students learn to obtain and record health histories and vital signs, test vision, draw blood, and perform basic laboratory procedures. Upon completion, graduates can earn an industry-recognized certification, enabling them to enter the workforce immediately or continue their education in the medical field.

By enrolling in the CMA program at Premier High School – Lubbock, Natalie gained real-world experience that equipped her for her future career. “Participating in the CMA program gave me experience and confidence that I needed to pursue dreams,” she said. “I have also learned other valuable skills like time management, independence, and that it’s okay to ask for help when I need it.”

She credits the campus staff with helping her navigate the challenges of high school while building confidence in her abilities. “My teachers were always so supportive and understanding,” Natalie said. “They really took the time to get to know me and helped me stay focused when things felt overwhelming. Enrolling at Premier gave me the space and support I needed to believe in myself.”

“Natalie is a wonderful example of what can happen when students are given the opportunity to learn at their own pace and the encouragement to believe in themselves,” said Premier High School Campus Director Julianne Maikai. “She’s grown tremendously in both confidence and skill, and we’re incredibly proud of all that our students continue to accomplish every day.

After earning her high school diploma and completing the CMA program, Natalie plans to attend college and pursue a career as a cardiac sonographer, with the goal of promoting health and wellness in her community.
