For the Barrera family, opportunity and determination are a shared tradition. At TexasWorks and Premier High School – McAllen, father and son duo Miguel Barrera Sr. and Miguel Barrera Jr. are turning that shared drive into real-world skills through the campus’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) welding program.

Miguel Jr. first discovered the welding program while attending Premier High School – Palmview. Intrigued by the opportunity to learn a hands-on trade, he transferred to the McAllen campus, even though it meant a 30-minute daily commute. What he didn’t expect was that his enthusiasm for the program would inspire his father to join him.

A handyman by trade, Miguel Sr. has always enjoyed working with tools and learning new skills. When his son told him about TexasWorks – McAllen, a tuition-free diploma and career certification program for adults ages 18-50 on the same campus, he saw an opportunity to achieve two personal goals he had long put on hold: finishing his high school diploma and earning a welding certification.

“I’ve always been interested in welding,” said Miguel Barrera Sr. “When I heard about the program from my son, I thought, why not go back to school and learn these skills together?”

Balancing work, family, and school has been no small feat. Mr. Barrera works nights so he can spend time with his family during the day, including time in class with his son. The two often study and hone their craft together, encouraging each other to stay focused and motivated.

“Having my dad here has made this experience even more meaningful,” said Miguel Jr. “We motivate each other every day, and it’s been inspiring to watch him achieve his goals alongside me.”

With Miguel Sr. set to graduate this winter and Miguel Jr. preparing to graduate in May, the Barreras are proud of how far they’ve come. They’ve not only advanced their education but also discovered a shared passion that continues to bring them closer together.

“The Barreras’ story reflects what Premier High School and TexasWorks are all about, providing hope and creating opportunities for individuals and families to pursue education and career goals,” said Campus Director Edgar Martinez. “They’re a perfect example of what makes our program special. It’s never too late to learn something new or earn your diploma, and we hope to continue providing these opportunities to more families in the community.”
