Like many young adults balancing personal responsibilities, student Jovanni Gomez struggled to stay on track in a traditional high school setting. Realizing he needed a fresh start and a more flexible, supportive environment, he enrolled in TexasWorks – San Juan, a tuition-free high school diploma and career certification program tailored for adult learners ages 18–50.
TexasWorks meets students where they are. The program offers a flexible schedule and a mastery-based curriculum, blending personalized academic instruction with career readiness training and personal development. This student-centered approach creates a supportive learning environment that enables individuals like Jovanni to re-engage with their education and build essential life and workforce skills, while continuing to manage full-time jobs and personal responsibilities.
That supportive environment made all the difference for Jovanni. Over time, he began to develop a stronger focus, renewed confidence, and a more serious commitment to his goals. “I felt supported from day one,” he shared. “The staff was always there to offer help or encouragement whenever it was needed.”

Through TexasWorks, students gain more than academic knowledge—they build real-world skills such as time management, effective communication, and a strong work ethic. These skills are essential to the program’s mission: helping students earn their diplomas and preparing them to thrive in life and the workplace.
Students also have access to hands-on training in high-demand fields through the school’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. Thanks to a partnership with McAllen Career Institute, Jovanni earned his welding certification while completing his coursework. Now, he plans to enlist in the United States Army and hopes to one day, start his own business.
“At TexasWorks, our goal is to show students that their past doesn’t define their future,” said TexasWorks – San Juan Campus Director Jose Balderas. “Jovanni is a great example of what can happen when a student is given the correct support and someone who believes in their potential. We can’t wait to see what he accomplishes next.”
For individuals seeking a second chance and for families looking for a program that invests in its students, TexasWorks delivers lasting results. “These programs matter,” Jovanni said. “TexasWorks helped me realize I’m capable of doing great things and that it’s never too late to reach my goals.”
