A unique aspect of several of our Premier High Schools, serving students grades 9-12, and TexasWorks, serving adults ages 18-50, campuses is their Career and Technical Education (CTE) options. Through these options, students receive job training, have opportunities to participate in paid or unpaid internships, receive industry-recognized certifications, and begin meaningful careers after high school. In honor of Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month, we spoke with our Premier High School and TexasWorks – Waco representatives about their CTE offering in Certified Medical Assistant.

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) program trains the next generation of health professionals to support physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other medical providers in different specialties. Throughout the program, students learn to obtain and record health histories and vital signs and, in some cases, may test vision, draw blood, and perform basic laboratory procedures in preparation for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) exam administered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Upon completion, program participants can receive an industry-recognized certification as medical assistants.

“This program has far exceeded my expectations,” said TexasWorks – Waco student Albert Riggins. “The class is informative and highly engaging, offering real-life scenarios. At times, the material can be challenging and overwhelming, but with the encouragement and guidance from my instructors, my goals feel attainable. I am grateful for programs like this one and am excited to start my career in the medical field.”

Why Career and Technical Education (CTE)? Students can begin training for a career while earning their diploma. CTE provides students with the skills and training to further their education and pursue meaningful careers in high-demand professions.
