When Dawn and Matthew Cox enrolled their two children at Amarillo Collegiate Academy (ACA) in 2012, they were hopeful for a fresh start. Their daughter, Kaylee, was beginning first grade, and their son, Kaden, was entering fourth. After years of challenges in the traditional public school system, they were looking for a school environment where both children could thrive.
The family’s decision to switch schools came after Kaden had been diagnosed with ADHD at a young age. Bright, curious, and independent, he often struggled to stay engaged in the classroom. While his previous school had suggested strategies to support his learning, they were never implemented. However, their experience at Amarillo Collegiate Academy, a tuition-free public charter school, was different from the start.
“From the very first day, Kaden received the support he had been needing,” shared his mother, Dawn Cox. “His teachers took the time to understand how he learned best, what kept him motivated, and nurtured his strengths.”
In middle school, Kaden began taking meaningful steps toward his long-term goal of joining the military. Like many adolescents, he faced challenges with confidence and direction. But the faculty and staff at Amarillo Collegiate Academy, including teacher Jaclyn Gaitan and Campus Director Chad Reneau, provided consistent guidance. Over the years, Mr. Reneau continued to encourage Kaden to pursue his dream of military service, supporting him as he earned the rank of Eagle Scout and connecting him with local recruiters.
“Every student at ACA has unique strengths, and Kaden’s journey is a perfect example of what’s possible when we meet students where they are and help them build confidence and independence,” said Director Chad Reneau. “It’s inspiring to see students take the tools they gain and turn them into real achievements. Kaden’s story shows just how far dedication and support can take a student.”
After earning his high school diploma in 2021, Kaden excelled on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) exam and enlisted in the U.S. Army as a Private First Class. He now serves in Air and Missile Defense in Germany, gaining career training, learning a new language, and preparing to enroll in college courses.
The Cox family remains an active part of the ACA community, as their daughter Kaylee continues to thrive and is on track to graduate in 2027.
