A unique aspect of several of our Premier High Schools, serving students grades 9-12, and TexasWorks, serving students ages 18-50, is their Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways, designed to equip students with the skills and certifications to enter high-demand careers.

This CTE Month, we’re proud to highlight Premier High School and TexasWorks – Brownsville, whose CTE offering in Phlebotomy prepares students for careers as certified Phlebotomy Technicians through real-world experience and hands-on skill development.

As vital members of the healthcare community, students in the program learn essential clinical skills, including blood collection, venipuncture, micro-collection techniques, lab safety procedures, specimen handling, and patient care practices, all while maintaining patient confidentiality and safety.

The campus will launch a one-semester Industry-Based Certification (IBC) program this spring, designed to help students quickly build industry-ready skills while continuing to work toward their high school diploma. Upon completion, participants have the opportunity to earn an industry-recognized certification as Phlebotomy Technicians.

“Our goal at Premier High School and TexasWorks – Brownsville is to give students hands-on experience and industry-level expectations from day one,” said CTE Lead Teacher Humberto Cisneros. “Through this program, we are not only preparing them to graduate high school and beyond, but are providing them with the knowledge, technical skills, and confidence needed to enter the workforce and pursue high-demand careers.”

Through CTE programs like this, Premier High School and TexasWorks campuses across Texas continue to provide students with opportunities to participate in paid or unpaid internships, earn industry-recognized certifications, and begin building meaningful careers after high school.

Why Career and Technical Education (CTE)? Students can begin training for a career while earning their diploma. CTE provides students with the skills and training to further their education and pursue meaningful careers in high-demand professions.
