Lubbock is home to one of West Texas’ most vibrant healthcare communities, anchored by major providers such as Covenant Health, University Medical Center, and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. As the demand for skilled healthcare professionals continues to grow across the state, Premier High School – Lubbock is helping meet that need by preparing students to enter the medical field with confidence after graduation.

Premier High School – Lubbock is a tuition-free charter school for grades 9–12 that combines flexible, mastery-based academics with career-focused training. Its Career and Technical Education (CTE) offering in the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) program provides students with hands-on clinical experience and industry certification, teaching skills such as taking vital signs, drawing blood, and performing lab procedures, thereby preparing them to enter the workforce immediately or continue their education in the medical field.

Among the students who have benefited from the CMA program at the West Texas campus is Chloe Escamilla, who says the experience shaped her future in ways she never expected. “I was welcomed and supported from day one,” Chloe said. “The program was challenging at times, but my instructors kept me focused, encouraged me, and gave me the confidence to achieve my academic and professional goals. Since earning my certification, I’ve had the privilege of working in a pediatric clinic for Covenant Hospital, and now I work in the cardiology department at Texas Tech University Medical Center in Lubbock.”

“Lubbock’s healthcare network plays a vital role in serving our region, and we’re proud to help prepare students to be part of it,” said campus CTE Coordinator Iris Whalin. “Our Certified Medical Assistant program gives students the skills, professionalism, and confidence they need to step directly into meaningful, high-demand careers.”

Now, Chloe plans to continue her education at South Plains College, where she hopes to become both a licensed vocational nurse and a registered nurse.
