At Lewisville School of Science and Technology, students are diving into the world of healthcare and biotechnology through the school’s Bio Medical Science program, now in its third year. Led by teacher Beth Maynard, a retired radiographer, the program combines hands-on learning with career preparation, giving students a strong foundation in medical science and research.

The curriculum offers a unique range of classes, including forensics, human body systems, patient care, and medical interventions, each designed to challenge students with real-world situations. Research-based labs help students strengthen their critical thinking and technical skills, while projects bring lessons to life. This fall, students are creating their own emergency rooms and crime scenes as part of their coursework.

“This program has been challenging, but it has given me a great introduction to medicine and healthcare,” said Elijah Mumba, a senior enrolled in the program. “It’s a pathway I would absolutely recommend to all students with an interest in medicine; they are bound to find a topic they enjoy.”

The program culminates with a Bio Innovations capstone course, which prepares students for the national Biotechnology Aptitude and Competency Exam (BACE). If passed, students will receive an industry-recognized certificate from Biotility, opening the door to internships, advanced study, and future careers in healthcare and biotechnology.

Maynard, who brings over a decade of professional experience into the classroom, believes the program is more than just preparation for exams; it’s about helping students discover their potential. “These courses give students the skills and confidence to step into real medical environments, whether through internships or future careers,” she explained.

With its mix of hands-on labs, career certifications, and innovative projects, the Bio Medical Science program is quickly becoming one of the school’s most impactful offerings, helping students prepare for the opportunities of tomorrow.
